Where my vote doesn't matter...
As the Monash Ball is coming next week, all nominees for Mr and Ms Monash are scrambling to secure votes to win the whatever-the-hell-is-it-useful-for titles. It is getting insanely competitive to the extent that the nominees have started to pair up with each other (boy-girl pairing, of course. Boy-boy pairing will get you no votes, except from the yaoi Comm girls, and girl-girl paring is not possible because the world isn't big enough for both of them to win). Is tag-team wrestling one of the judging events? 'Cause that would actually make me regret not going for the ball. I'm guessing the rationale behind this is that Boy A's voters will have to vote for Girl A and Girl A's voters will also have to vote for Boy A. A classic I-scratch-your-back-you-scratch-mine situation.
Anyway, there I was in the Library's computer lab checking

I was too engrossed with my important-work-stuff that I didn't notice that I picked one without the note and he was quick to inform me and picked a lollipop that had one to give it to me. His possible thought: "Tiu Nah Seng! Took me so long to cut those small slits on the paper to poke to lollipop through and you picked one that didn't have one?! You blind, is it?! I take for you la!" As he left my table to

Erm, maybe he was a little too excited with giving me a lollipop (50 cents' "Candyshop" came to mind and I looked at the lollipop in a totally different way. Lychee flavour, btw).
Okay la, him giving out lollipops is waaaay better than this girl giving out flyers of herself. Oh, forgot to tell you this, I. Have. No. Idea. How. To. Vote. For. Them. They'll cough out blood if they knew about this.
[Edit] I was told that each nominee was allocated funds by MUSA to buy these sweets for their campaigning. KNS! That means they (the nominees) are indirectly helping us buy to sweets, since the students are the ones who fund MUSA. I should have just grabbed a bunch of lollipop and furthermore, if you're helping us buy sweets, at least buy something better! I don't understand why MUSA should pay for their campaiging. Are the prizes for Mr and Ms Monash going to be distributed to their voters? I think not!

13 cm long banana:
so finally we know where has our annual RM30 gone......
1. Bribing ppl to attend MUSA activities
2. Bribing ppl to vote for MrMs Monash
Viva la revolution!!!
Not annual la...Every semester we pay once...what to do? We're not allow to decide what to do with our own money...
So what do we do then? Have referenda for all decisions we're gonna make on student welfare? So that every student has his/her say on where his/her money goes.
Ideal situation isn't it, but...
-Uh
Well.. if they don't pay for the campaigning, nobody will want to volunteer for mr and mrs monash. then the ball will become boring. then nobody will want to attend the ball anymore. then musa won't get to host the annual dinner any longer. then then.. later no more musa!
bwa ha ha..
-.- they won nomination mar.. should gif them incentives to carry on. the campaigning got the uni pretty lighten up anyway
Eh...I don't understand how that will lead to the end of MUSA...
the activities chairperson gave them money. as soon as the student council found out about it, they ordered hui ling to stop doing so. u shd complain to the council instead of being a chicken and bitching behind their backs. and you guys wonder why student democracy doesn't work here... BECAUSE NONE OF YOU BOTHER TO PRACTICE IT. silent ppl are just as guilty
First of all, how were we to know that it wasn't MUSA that had decided on giving them the money? Secondly of all, shouldn't the activities chairperson have to go through the council's approval before being able to use the funds for the contestant's campaigning? Unless you are telling me that the activities chairperson has full authority in utilizing the council's funds w/o getting approval. If I were to complain, what are the proper channels in doing so? Drop a complaint in the MVO boxes? (btw, I don't see any ard the campus) Funny how you are calling us chicken when you don't even dare to leave a name.
hey, I left my name!
anyway...
from what i understand, the current practice is that at the beginning of the year, all committees and divisions ask for a budget. after much scrutiny, the budget is maybe amended, and then approved. after it has been approved, the student council is not allowed to touch the money that has been allocated. only special directives can change that. however, the council is supposed to be given monthly updates of the money is spent, and what amendments they are planning on doing.
instead of disclosing such information, it was only revealed at the last minute. and that was when the council issued their special directive.
btw sry for calling u chicken, i didnt mean to attack u personally. but it just pisses me off that students won't stand up and hold their governing body accountable. WTF. we pay 50 bucks a semester. SERIOUSLY.
Thanks for leaving your name! I finally can put a name to those comments. Also thanks for the info, I now have a better understanding of how MUSA runs.
So what do you suggest we do if we disagree with something MUSA does?
easy.
write the council an official letter of complaint, and make sure it's included in their meeting agenda if you want it to be recorded and remembered for ever and ever and ever.... they get such huge headaches every time they get a complaint. ive seen it. most of them moan, but on the upside, they do respond and provide explanations, or, in my case, an apology (parking issue).
but hey, they signed up for the job, so let them handle it, right? STUDENT RIGHTS!
dude, i got a better idea.
just vote the ones you don't like out of f****** office.
Oh so you're the one behind the parking lots letter? Kudos to you. That would only happen if it was like American Idol, but the only difference is that we don't vote to keep them in.
no, my gripe with was regarding when they took up the whole f****** car park for that street carnival... I complained and got an apology.
the student democratic system here is in fact on par with that of other aussie campuses, and much better than local unis. the reason why it feels so "elitist" is that most students are not taking an active interest and holding their elected representatives accountable. look at the other campuses, so many office bearers have been deposed thanks to "people power"...
and why I think the referendum is actually a good thing, because one of the things it does is give us more power to take action against errant members.
I believe the current council has recognised this as a problem, and has tried to tackle the issue... though whether or not what they've done is enough is seriously debatable. but Rome wasn't built in a day, which is why I'll be very carefully watching the different political parties during next week's elections.
